The visionary co-founder of the acclaimed Alquímico Bar in Cartagena, received the most coveted award in the cocktail industry for his outstanding commitment to sustainability and community.
Mark Sansom, Content Director of The World’s 50 Best Bars, was delighted to announce Jean as the winner of this year’s Altos Bartenders’ Bartender Award on October 4, 2022, in Barcelona.
He told us that Jean’s surprisingly inventive approach to the art of bartending, combined with his progressive attitude towards sustainability; his unfailing commitment to the Alquímico team and the community; and his faithful spirit to each of the key principles, made him a perfect candidate to win the award.
Let’s remember that supporting the bartender community has been a pillar for Altos Tequila since its creation in 2010. Twelve years later, Altos continues its support through the Tahona Society Competition initiative: the first contest for bartenders that focuses on sustainable projects. The Altos Bartenders’ Bartender Award was introduced to The World’s 50 Best Bars in 2017.
“From the Altos Tequila and Tahona Society family we congratulate our friend Jean of Alquímico Bar, for winning the Altos Bartenders’ Bartender Award as part of The World’s 50 Best Bars 2022,” says Carlos Andrés Ramírez, Global Advocacy Manager of Altos Tequila.
The Altos Bartenders’ Bartender is the prestigious award voted on by the bartenders who belong to the list of bars nominated in The World’s 50 Best Bars; each year this select group is asked to nominate a fellow bartender who pushes the boundaries of what it means to be a great bartender.
And Jean has definitely had a significant impact on the global bar scene and is therefore recognized as an important figure in the international hospitality community.
In 2018, Alquímico invested in a 25-acre farm in rural Colombia to sustainably and organically grow the freshest produce for its high-volume cocktail program.
During the pandemic, in the face of full lockdown, Jean led his #FromTheBarToTheFarm team, providing the housing, and collaborating with small local farmers to learn and develop sustainable farming practices.
In addition to planting their organic products, the team donated food baskets to people from poor neighborhoods in Cartagena, built an apiary to reduce the bar’s future dependence on sugar, and reforested native trees.

Two years ago, Alquímico became the first Colombian bar to appear on The World’s 50 Best Bars list. That same year, it was also the first bar in Latin America to receive the Sustainable Bar Award.
When Jean was informed that he had been selected by his colleagues as the winner of the Altos 2022 Bartenders’ Bartender Award, he thought of all the people who had worked with him and supported him over the years.
For Jean, “this recognition is the reward for the work carried out by the entire Alquímico team for years in Colombia. The Altos Bartenders’ Bartender Award is a great opportunity to share the incredible projects that people develop in our part of the world and to give a positive vision of Colombia, a beautiful country that deserves to have all people visit.”
